Drum Atweme

Drum Atweme was formed in the early 90's as an answer to the needs of the aboriginal at risk youth, particularly girls. The focus of the program is to create a positive influence and healthy atmosphere through the use of traditional music. The group consists of Aboriginal girls from the ages of 6-13, who must remain in school to be part of the program. They are also active in the decision making of the group regarding performances, creativity and budgettinh which ultimately results in giving the girls a strong sense of self-worth and esteem.

Drum Atweme is largely self-funded through their performances, with all profits remaining within the group to provide ongoing equipment maintenance, clothing, healthy food and travel costs.

  Australia Task Force Update
